Mounting Your Latch
Mounting the Best Gate Latch - The Best Gate Latch will fit gate-to-post spacings (distance between the gate and the post) from a minimum of 2.5 inches to a maximum of 5.5 inches. For tighter gate-to-post spacing see the video below.
Step 1: Set the Best Gate Latch on the post at the desired location on the post. Use a pencil to mark the top edge of the latch. A good way to know where to install the Best Gate Latch on the post is to set it in line with the second gate rail from the top. Other considerations might be the height needed for operation from horseback, which could vary by gate and fence design. If mounting to a round post, it is a good idea to make a flat spot for a more secure perch.
Step 2: Use a square to draw a line across the width of the post at the pencil mark.
Step 3: Align the top of the Best Gate Latch with the pencil line and the center of the post. Hold the Best Gate Latch in place and use a 7/32 bit to drill four pilot holes.
Step 4: Using the 1/2 inch socket, attach the Best Gate Latch to the post with the 4 lag bolts supplied with every latch.
Once the bolts are snug, the Best Gate Latch is ready to use!

For tighter Gate-to-Post Spacings
Notching the Wood Post for gate-to-post spacing of less than 2.5 inches
If the space between your gate and post is less than 2.5 inches, you will need to make a notch in the post to recess the Best Gate Latch.
Examples:
Mounting the Best Gate Latch for Wood Post with gate-to-post spacing of less than 2.5 inches
Step 1: Set the Best Gate Latch on the wood post at the desired location. Use a pencil to mark the top and bottom edges of the latch. A good way to know where to install the Best Gate Latch on the post is to set it in line with the second gate rail from the top. Other considerations might be the height needed for operation from horseback, which could vary by gate and fence design.
Step 2: Using a square, draw a line across the width of the post at each pencil mark. These will mark the top and the bottom of the Best Gate Latch.
Step 3: Next, set your circular saw at the depth needed to create the required space.
Step 4: The first two cuts with the saw are critical. Follow the lines marked on the post.
Step 5: Now make a series of cuts in the post between the two lines. These cuts don’t necessarily have to be straight.
Step 6: After making the cuts, use a chisel and a hammer to remove the wood. Clean out any high spots to create a smooth seat for the Best Gate Latch to rest flat and level.
Step 7: Hold the Best Gate Latch in place and use a 7/32 bit to drill pilot holes.
Step 8: Using the 1/2 inch socket, attach the Best Gate Latch to the post with the lag bolts supplied with every latch.

If the space between your gate and post is less than 2.5 inches, you will need to make a notch in the post to recess the Best Gate Latch.
Examples:
- If the measured space between the gate and the post is 2 inches; you’ll need notch a recess of a half inch to create a 2.5 inch space for the Best Gate Latch.
- Likewise, if the space between the gate and the post 1.5 inches, you’ll need to make a 1 inch notch in the post.
